The official name of the country is the Union of the Comoros. It is a sovereign island nation in the Indian Ocean, located between Mozambique and Madagascar. Neighboring countries include Tanzania to the northwest and the Seychelles to the northeast. The population is estimated at 866,629 (2024).
The Union of the Comoros has three official languages — Comorian, Arabic, and French — although French remains the sole official language on Mayotte. The country comprises four main volcanic islands in the Comoros archipelago: Grande Comore, Mohéli, Anjouan, and Mayotte, along with several smaller islands.
Mayotte, however, has never been governed by the independent Comorian state and continues to be administered by France as an overseas department. It was the only island that voted against independence in 1974.
Comoros is the only country that is simultaneously a member of the African Union, Francophonie, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Arab League, and the Indian Ocean Commission. Since independence in 1975, the country has experienced multiple coups d’état. As of 2025, approximately 20% of the population lives below the international poverty line of USD 1.90 per day.

Comoros Citizenship by Investment – Historical Overview
The Comoros economic citizenship program was introduced in 2001 under the Constitution of the Union of the Comoros. It was regulated by the Law on Economic Citizenship of 27 November 2008, with the last major amendments made in 2013.
The authority responsible for processing applications was the National Independent Committee, and citizenship was granted solely by presidential decree.
Typical processing time was about two months after submission of a complete application, though this varied depending on individual circumstances. Upon approval, the applicant received a Certificate of Naturalization and a Comorian passport, valid for five years and renewable upon expiry.
